Is Your Dog Water Bowl Making Your Dog Sick?

Posted on Sep 03, 2009 under pet water fountain, pet waterer | No Comment

Would you drink from a dirty dog water bowl contaminated with leaves, bugs and dried dog saliva?

Then why should your dog?

Okay, so maybe your dog’s water bowl isn’t so bad.

You rinsed it off, your refilled it with tap water and plopped it on the floor.  That’s good enough for a dog, right?

In some cases, yes.

But often, your dog simply won’t drink enough water.  Like humans, a dog will drink just about anything if thirsty enough.  But if the water isn’t inviting, then usually your dog will wait as long as possible to drink.

By not getting enough water, though, your dog’s organs work harder.  The added strain can shorten it’s lifespan.

Dogs can get urinary tract infections and painful kidney stones that go unnoticed by we humans.  Dehydration can lead to nausea, organ damage and even death.

So just because you toss down a dog water bowl, don’t assume your dog is getting enough to drink.

One way to determine if your dog is drinking enough is to measure how much water you give it. But really? Do you seriously need to add this task to your already large to-do list?

Actually, no. Not if you use the right kind of dog water bowl.

There are products out now that combine a dog water bowl with a small 1-2 gallon tank that automatically refills the dog’s bowl as it empties.

Not only does this save you the hassle of refilling a dog bowl several times throughout the day, but it also gives you the ability to guage how much your dog is drinking.

Better still, is a pet water fountain that provides a stream of water.

Come, on, we’re kidding right?

No. There are actually important considerations behind this.

Stagnant water attracts bacteria and collects debris. Having a flowing stream that circulates through a carbon filter will provide a constant source of fresh water.

Moreover, dogs and cats are attracted to moving objects. The mere presence of moving water can act as an attention grabber and cause your dog to drink more.

Your dog must drink regularly thoughout the day to stay healthy and water is the second most important element for its survival next to oxygen.

While a simple plastic or metal dog water bowl has been the norm for years, they simply are outdated and can frankly be dangerous.

A pet waterer or pet water fountain may seem like a pricey luxury until you realize the huge benefits it provides.

It’s a very small investment to ensure your dog is properly hydrated and not drinking water that is making it sick.

Why does my dog dig in her water bowl, and how do I make her stop?

Posted on Jan 25, 2010 under Best Dog Water Bowl | 6 Comments

My dog constantly "digs" in her water bowl, sending water flying all over my kitchen nearly every day. Why does she do this, and what’s a good way to make her stop doing it?

Somewhere along the line she’s learned this. You can try training it out of her if you can catch her doing it. Or you can change the kind of bowl she has to make it more difficult. Or only put a little water in the bowl at a time.

MY dog keeps putting water or other things in her good bowl. Any idea why?

Posted on Jan 08, 2010 under Best Dog Water Bowl | 3 Comments

My dog uses her nose to slash water from her water bowl into her good bowl, often soaking her good before she eats it. She will also take various things sometimes toys or other items laying around the house, and puts them in her food or water bowl. It seems a little obsessive.

How can I get my dog to drink water from new bowl?

Posted on Nov 29, 2009 under Best Dog Water Bowl | 5 Comments

She’s never been picky about drinking or eating from any bowl. I recently changed her old double plastic bowl for a new ceramic food bowl and an automatic waterer. She will not drink from the new water bowl when it has the water container on it. I’m pretty sure the bubbling noise scares here. How can I get her to drink from it?

I recently adopted a dog from the pound and he was freaked out about the bubbling part, but he did get used to it. Just give the dog some time. I doubt he’d make himself dehydrated. But, adding something with a meat flavor could help jump start him.

Where can I find a water bowl for my dog?

Posted on Nov 22, 2009 under Best Dog Water Bowl | 21 Comments

He is a large breed dog so he will need to drink a lot of water. I am looking for something that is easy to clean and not too easy to knock around. Thanks.
Nahimana and Sir John 65 seems to have provided me with the answer I was looking for. Thanks very much. I already knew of the Pet Stores and could not find what I was looking for. I was looking for more personal experience answers. Thanks again

They make units that look like the 5-gallon bottles that you can have delivered by a bottled water company (of course, they’re not 5 gallons) I have a 2 or 3 gallon one, which I refill every other day (4 dogs). I suggest that you get one of these, but make sure it’s not too big (you don’t want the water to get stale). PetCo and PetsMart, sells them. The brand I have is LeBistro. I love it and my dogs have NEVER tipped over.

I have a dog that finds it necessary to walk through her water bowl shortly after it has been filled?

Posted on Nov 20, 2009 under Best Dog Water Bowl | 9 Comments

Shortly after her bowl is filled with fresh water she will wait until no one is looking and then splash her front paws through the water, slopping it all over the floor. She is the older of two female, medium small dogs in our house. Is this some form of asserting her dominance over the younger dog? Spoiling the water for her? We live in a fairly mild climate, so I don’t think her paws are hot. Thanks.

My Boston Terrier did this. Buy an elevated food/water dish. You want one just high enough that they can eat and drink comfortably.

This also helps if your dog scarfs down her food quickly.
