Why does my dog prefer toilet water over his dog bowl water?

Posted on Sep 29, 2009 under Best Dog Water Bowl | 13 Comments

Is it okay for him to drink out of the toilet?

There could be many reasons. One could be that your scent is on the bowl and it wishes to be close to you. Another is the height of the bowl might be just right for it to reach into. Some dogs don’t like bending to drink it makes them feel like they are choking when they swallow.

No. Close the lid, or close the door to the bathroom. Re-direct him to his water dish.

Probably because it is always cold, but it really isn’t healthy for him. Just keep the lid closer or the bathroom door shut and be sure he always has clean water in his bowl.

Do you know how much bacteria is in the toilet?

Shut the bathroom door to prevent him from drinking it again.

No, it isn’t healthy. Think about it: would you consider drinking from the toilet? Keep the door closed and the lid down.

If he preferres the colder water, give him a few ice cubes in his bowl. They’ll keep the water colder and he can chew them, too.

Toilet wate is sparking clean, cold and fresh. (it runs continuously)
Drinking from it is a different story.
Make your dogs water dish more appealing. Clean it more often, change the water, add ice cubes.

Dogs are like that until you train them. He’s only doing what is natural. He doesn’t know the difference between regular water and toilet water. You have to train him. I don’t think its a good idea to let him drink the toilet water, especially if you cuddle with him and let him lick you. I think it would hurt you more than the dog. Redirect him to drink form his water dish.
