For most people, choosing a dog water bowl is usually as simple as heading to the local pet store and buying the first bowl in sight.

But the purchase of a dog water bowl requires some consideration.

Besides the obvious factors like dog size, you must also consider the activity level, age and whether a dog bowl will be used indoors or outdoors.

Puppies like to chew everything, so a plastic bowl may not be be most appropriate.  Plastic that is swallowed can obstruct a dog’s digestive system causing medical problems.

Puppies can chew hoses on automatic feeders too, rendering them worthless.

Plastic dog bowls have other limitations.  Scratches in plastic dog bowls can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

So is a metal bowl the answer?

Not necessarily.

If the dog bowl is used primarily outdoors, metal dog bowls can rust. 

Also, any water left in a bowl can become stagnant and draw mesquitos and bacteria.

Most dog bowls lack anti-skid material too. The bowl gets moved all around by the dog which looks messy and can become a hazard for trips and falls.
