about 6 months ago i bought the cutest little sweetest pitbull puppy. i personally have never owned a dog in my life, so spent many weeks researching online articles and things of that nature, to see if i was competent enough to be a successful dog owner. in spite of all the information….nothing i mean NOTHING…..would prepare me for what was about to come. everything was fine at first but as my dog aged and got a bit bigger, he began to tear up my house, my backyard, and everything he came into contact with. if he doesnt chew it, he eats it, if he doesnt eat it, he rips it to pieces, and if he doesnt rip, he buries it somewhere where no human person can find it. i wanted to have him as a house dog at first, but after several chewed couches, and failed potty training experiences, i thought it would be best to keep him outside. i do not personally believe in chaining or caging dogs to restrict their movements, so he is free to roam the backyard as he pleases. however i often go one or two days not showing him any attention because i am either too tired, too busy, or just plain dont feel like it. i bought him a gigantic dog food bowl which i fill too the top with dog food, fresh boiled vegetables that i cook for him, and sometimes i throw a few bacon bits in there. i purposely fill it all the way up because………well once….okay twice……i forgot too feed him and i felt so guilty about it that now i think i over feed him for fear of the dog starving to death. there has been many times i forgot too fill his water bowl. i do love the dog i just dont think i was prepared the time and patience he requires. it’s like having a kid!!!!!! so anyways is this norma;? or am ii just not a dog person? should i give him away? i do not want to lose him but i also do not want to mistreat him.

PEOPLE I DO REALIZE THAT I AM IRRESPONSIBLE. HOWEVER I DID NOT ASK THIS QUESTION TO BE BASHED OR PUT DOWN I ASKED BECAUSE I DO WANT HELP. OBVIOUSLY IF I DID NOT ALREADY REALIZE THAT I HAVE A PROBLEM THEN I WOULD NOT ASK THE QUESTION. THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR ANSWERS TO THOSE WHO WERE DECENT.
I also bought a cute puppy few years ago. Then it got a bit bigger just like a baby becomes a toddler. He was just like yours, ripping off stuff and all. Once he jumped on me and made my mouth bleed. I was so pissed atm and shouted at him even I did cry because I was freaked out with the blood coming off my mouth. He was also so scared and I felt guilty.
There has been times that I fed him later than normal or forgot to feed him at all and felt guilty just like you. But I do love him very much moreover now he’s a good boy however it took him a year to be like this. I’m trying to be as attentive as I can but believe me on that days I was thinking just like you. Once I’ve seen him sad I understood how much I love him and what he means to me. He has been my best friend literally and has never left me alone. True story.
Give yourself another chance you won’t regret
But if you’re really forgetting him maybe it’s better to let someone else to take care of him who can do this better.

My 2 year old is always pretending to be different animals but most of the time she’s a dog. Nothing tickles her more than when you rub her belly or give her a bowl of water to lap from (hey, I’m ALL for encouraging my kids’ imaginations…)
So I was thinking since I’m making cookies later I’d make a small batch of cookies to make into "dog" treats for her. But they have to be realistic, so dry and crunchy.

Any ideas on what kind of cookies would work best?
Out of molasses :/
How about peanut-butter? Or sugar cookies. They can be crunchy if you cook them a tad longer than normal, but the ingredients are stupid simple and cheap for both of those.

My dog is giving birth right now in my bathroom as I type and I cannot make it to the vet because of the weather. Yes I have googled "dog birth" for some tips but would like some advice from people who have experienced this personally? I go into the bathroom to check on her every 15 minutes, sat a bowl of water next to her which she seems to be enjoying, and comfort her as best as I can but any other advice would be helpful and please don’t write something you googled.
don’t panic. did she go to the vet? if so, how many puppies is she having? if she prefers you next to her, be there. get her a bunch of towels to lay on, and wait for the first pup. after the first one comes, wait two minutes, if she’s not doing anything by now, rip open the sac yourself. tie a knot in the umbilical chord one inch away from the pup, then cut with sharp scizzors next to the knot, away from the baby. then use the thing you use to get muccus out of a child’s nose, to gently suck out the muccus from the baby’s mouth and nose. dry the puppy not too forcefully, but hard enough to get it crying. then the moms instinct should kick in. if they don’t, put the puppy next to her to nurse, and that should get her going. if you are worried, get a vet to help you over the phone. my friend’s dog had nine puppies and this helped a lot! Good Luck!

I read a question where someone asked if your dog knows how to drink from a roller ball water bottle and someone answered that it is a good idea if your dog spills their water bowls. My dogs spill their water bottles all the time so I figured I would ask what it was. My husband says he thinks it might be some sort of of bottle that hangs. If it is something that hangs, where would the best place to hang it.
They are the water bottles that are used in small animal cages. I use one for my rabbits and whenever I let him my dog enjoys drinking out of it too. They have little metal poles coming out of a water bottle with a ball on the end that when a dog licks water comes off on the tongue. Here is an example of a dog sized one. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2754644 Also they are usually placed on the side of dog crates.

She is a solid black, American short-hair. She is going to be 4 this November. She is an indoor cat and is the only cat in our apartment, no dogs or other free roaming animals.
I bought her one of those half gallon water bowls with the small water container on top (as she drinks it, the bowl refills itself). Only problem is, she seems driven to knock this thing over and spill water everywhere. I tried tying this water bowl down, tying the container on top to the bowl on bottom then tying them both to the corner of a microwave stand, she still manages to knock it over somehow.
So, we downgraded to a small water bowl. Nothing fancy. Well, she does drink out of it but every night when I come home from work, the bowl is halfway across the kitchen and the water is spilled everywhere. The bowl sits on the floor so it’s not like she knocks it off a ledge and it rolls. She HAS to be moving this bowl on her own …less my apartment is haunted (don’t put that thought in my head).
I’m at my wits end with her. I love her to death but I never thought a damn water bowl would be so much trouble.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? Any advice is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Best answer lands the 10!
Here’s a trick I used on a male cat named baby years ago. LOL I duck taped the water and food bowl to the floor. Duck tape is so strong with plastic bowls they might be able to splash a little water on your floor by the water bowl but not going to move it around the house. Cut off long enough pieces to fold one end to the other place it on the bottom. on both sides. Yes some tape will stick out but that’s the idea. Not only will it stick good but, cat walks up to bowl and drinks from middle.
When the cat tries to know it over they put their foot on floor where the tapes at. Once they get struck to the tape a few times with paw then pull away and lick paw. they get the point. Shows them you try this your paw will get sticky on it. They hate stuff on their paws. Witch hazel gets it off there paws when you get home. It won’t hurt the cat. It does get point across.
Or you have another thing you can do. Buy a metal or glass water bowl heavy enough they can’t move it. It they strong enough to move that duck tape the bottom as well. End of problem. Make sure you do it to cat food bowl as well. Once they figure out they can’t with water bowl they might start on the cat food bowl. LOL
We had a male cat named baby years ago that did this. Hubby finally told me after work 1 night when he’d been cleaning up water & cat food for like 2 weeks. I worked nights he worked days. Getting woke up while sleeping because of water & food from baby was a pain. LOL
I told hubby why you wait so long. Watch this. Duck tape both bowls to the floor tape sticking out on both sides when baby got his paw stuck a couple of times. He never did it again. LOL
Also got him cat nap balls that roll round the floor for when I was at work. So he was easily amused when hubby was sleeping. Tacked string toys with real bird feathers and squirrel fur we found at parks to the string. Kept him busy for hours. Got my hands on a giggling motion mouse as well.
Just before work would turn it on and leave. When cat walks by the mouse would move and giggle.
It your duck tape eludes you. Try a medium sized metal dog water bowl or medium size glass mixing bowl. I use both metal and glass ones. Now one when playing in them knocks them over. Hope this helps.

This system is designed to clean dog water in between sips (and slurps).
In a kennel environment, dogs come and go all the time, making a wonderful breeding ground for bacteria and viruses. Just like children in school, dogs often come home from kennel with an upset stomach or a sore throat. Kennel cough is very common in kennels and dog parks, and although it’s primarily spread by coughing a secondary vector is drinking water.
I see it as my job as a dog kennel owner to minimize risk of disease however possible, so in the past few months I’ve implemented a few simple solutions. The first is this water cleaning system.
The system is made up of a few parts:
1) A pump. In this case, I used a Hydor Seltz L20. This pump has a flowrate of 700 liters (185 gallons) per hour.
2) Piping. You can get this at any hardware or pet store.
3) A filter (or actually, a sterilizer). I use a Laguna Powerclear PT-520 filter, which rather than absorbing sediment, simply kills viruses and bacteria using ultraviolet (UV) light. I used a UV filter rather than a carbon (absorbing) filter for reasons explained in the video.
For this system to work reliably, you also need an automatic filling system (otherwise the pump will burn out when the bowl empties). For this, I used the following:
1) A toilet float (also called a ballcock) to automatically shut off water when the bowl is full.
2) Piping, specifically made for attaching to toilet cisterns.
3) Some wood to build a frame around the bowl to prevent it from moving. The reasons for this are hilariously shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2eUNaBwIVU
This system allows dogs to drink from their water bowl secure in the knowledge that the water is constantly being cleaned.

I had a beautiful pure breed German Shepherd, he was the best dog ever but i cant help and think he was retarded. We went every where together but if he ever got loose it was never hard to find him he’d go in a straight line until something stopped him and sat there staring at the obstruction, I cant help but think he thought "I’m not moving were going see who lasts longest" sadly the house won when we were forced to put him down after a tragic accident.
He was afraid of his water bowl, you had to spoon feed him. And I had a truck that we chained him to when we played in the yard, one day i sold it and bought a new one, he refused up to his last day on this earth to ride in it.
I loved him so much.
I have a new best friend now and he is so smart he knows where grandma lives even though she lives far away (almost 10 miles), he had a one point walked there ( I left door open by accident)
thanks for your help
Any animal can be retarded.
Its sad to hear about your dog. Im sorry for your loss.
Google " the downsyndrome tiger"
Just yeah. A retarded animal.
Uhm, but did your dog show like, any physical signs of retardation?
or was it just like, mentally challenged sorta thing?

My maltese puppy in around two months old. I have been looking high and low for a dog food that will help with tear staining, I use metal bowl for his food(and bottle or filtered water only). However, I have read that any dog food with food coloring(red),beet pulp or tomato pomance are all bad( for staining),yet I cannot seem to find a dog food without at least one of those ingredients.
So, if you could please help ,I would appreciate it. P.S I am not looking for any eye stain "removing products", just the dog foods(preferable for small breeds). Thank you in advance.
I had the same problem with my poodle. When she was 2 months old, she was tearing and staining, but she was also teething. Once she lost all her baby teeth and stopped teething, she stopped tearing as much. I also use the metal bowls and bottled water, but the tearing doesn’t completely stop. I feed her Nutros Puppy food and I’ve also looked, unsuccessfully, for dog foods without the dyes, but cannot find any. I’ve asked at pet stores, but they don’t seem to know what I’m talking about, but I have read that foods without the dyes will help. I think the puppy food has a lot less of the dyes from beet pulp. I blot the tears periodically with kleenex, but its just clear, it doesn’t stain anymore. We may just have to live with it. If you come across something that works, let me know.

What dog is best for outside but can also be an inside dog?
Im looking for a dog that can stay outside and be perfectly fine while im at school but when i come home it will be just as good inside. My state has all seasons as to summer, winter, spring, and fall so i need a dog that can stand up to all those. I want a lovable, friendly, sweet, kind, calm dog that can be lazy with me but athletic, energetic, hype dog that can run with me go to the park and be ok outside. I also need a dog that can be ok outside by its self for a couple hours while im at school an then i can tend to it when i get home and especially on the weekends and summer, winter etc breaks.
please help me tell me what i have to do to tend for the dog,if i dont need a dog, and/or what breed do you prefer?
Additional Details
if the dog is out side for a couple hours do yall think a dog house to keep it safe from the weather is good? and having a bowl of food and water in it too?
and if the weather is two bad i will put it in a cage inside is that ok? is it ok to have the dog outside or in the cage for about 6 to 7 hours? cuz thats the time when someone will be home but! i dont get home till 1 hour or less later? i get home at 4:00pm but my dad gets home at 2:00 to 2:35 ? do you think i can keep a dog in these conditions or u think i can still try?
what if i get a baby sitter? till i get home
Again, leaving a dog outside when no one is home is asking for trouble.
I just don’t think this is realistic. I don’t understand what is going to happen to this dog when you move out, go to college, or get a job.
I don’t understand who is going to be in charge of this dog – a child should NEVER be 100% in charge of a dog.
I don’t understand why the dog can’t be kept inside.
I don’t understand when you are going to have time for this dog if you don’t get home until 4pm. I assume you have chores & homework?
At 6-7 hours, the dog will need a dog walker to come in. Why won’t your parents help?
